Merry Christmas to you all. I hope you have a great day celebrating in whatever way you choose to (or choose not to).

And a happy new year to.

A segment of moon in the clouds.

Happy summer solstice (to those whom like me celebrate it)!

My family and I celebrated it on the weekend. There was good food, good people, good presents (I'm particularly fond of the Mark Twain book and the body shop soap I acquired) and many laughs. And heeaaapppssss of chocolate.

Today I briefly caught glimpses of the eclipse of the moon between clouds. Its a pity the weather wasn't great for viewing.

Luck and wishes there of.

I'm sure I've used that sentence before when wishing a particular person luck via an email. Oh well given this is quite a generic message for me its not like I was aiming that much for originality (if at all. And of course one could question whether originality is of any importance on LJ or during such a time).

Right I shall stop before this turns into some long philosophical musing. I'm aware that we are in the thick of exam season and I hope that all of you being examined will do well and that you don't suffer to much stress while going through the studying and sitting process.

Write on

The challenge:
Reply to this entry with a title (maximum of four words) about which you'd like me to write a fast fiction of exactly 200 words, together with a single word you want me to include in the text of the tale. I will see how I do in spinning them out.

I stole this from Morbane. It piqued my interest, enough to actually post something! I'm sorry its been so long folks but I'd/I've been lured away by sites with sound-bites of posts.

Read it, seen it.

Hello folks and folkettes.

As you might notice I've changed my LJ a bit. I wasn't happy with the old look so here comes the new...

The title of this post refers to where I review films and etc based on books I've read. This way I can take into account the all important question of whether certain things will make the book lover scream in horror or not.

So today: Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. Warning there might be mild spoilers ahead.

I've liked the books for a long time and nearly read them all. Because of this I was apprehensive about the film. The trailer didn't help. There was a lot of nudity and explosions which didn't fit in with the tone of the books. But after some good reviews from trusted people I decided to see it.

It was good.

The friendship between the main characters is well done. Watson was more true to the book then in other productions I've seen. No more is he just a sidekick. Instead he's a character in his own rights with his own strengths and weaknesses.

Holmes was not done as well as Watson. But aspects of his character were done well. His ability at disguise, his hatred of fashionable society, the mess that is his home, his mistreatment of his body all deserve nods here.

For the fans there were references to the books throughout. And the film is very detailed visually which was fitting given how descriptive parts of the books can be.

This was the first Guy Ritchie film I've seen and while I found certain of the camera angles very distracting I did love the beauty of his London. Especially at night.

The things I didn't like about this film were mainly the introduction of an ex for Holmes and the use of the violin throughout. Irene Adler is used in the film as the beautiful love interest. She is a character from "A scandal in Bohemia" that outwits Holmes. Holmes admires her for this but he has no warmer feelings for her. Holmes was not a sexual person. The character of Irene had been completely changed which also annoyed me. In the books she is a former opera signer not a thief. Often in the film Holmes plucked on a violin when he was thinking. But in the books Holmes would play beautiful music while thinking, not just pluck it. Its a small thing but it got to me, after all it would have been easy to just have him play the damn thing instead of pluck it.

So except for some small aspects and the treatment of Irene Adler the film was mostly true to the books. The plot was good, it was fast paced and in places visually stunning. Its worth seeing.

Let it be known that I am an ass.

While at a party on saturday night I came to a realization about myself. I now know myself better. This realization happened when I reached over to grab a witch's hat (I went as a witch to this years halloween festivities) and knocked over a bottle of open beer on to Grant's nice pale colored carpet.

I am a klutz. I knock over bottles, fall into water and trip up on pavements.

I wasn't always a klutz. I used to be more graceful but over the years I have become more prone to making an ass of myself.

I would suggest I should not ware heels but I do all this while in flats or as in the case of the beer, while sitting down.

Money, money, money (crud now I have the Abba song stuck in my head)

My apologies if you don't see me for awhile but I shall be hiding from the pun police.

Jessie has picked up a puppy trick, fetch.

There is a pine-cone which he has taken a shine too and regularly bats around the floor. Sometimes one of us will pick up the thing and roll it along the floor for him to chase. Well a few days ago I rolled the thing along for him and then he picked it up in his mouth and carried it back for me to repeat the rolling.

He now does this quite regularly. If he wants to play he just picks up his pine-cone, takes it to you and drops it on whatever thing you were paying attention to THAT WAS NOT HIM!

My perusal of the newspaper today was often interrupted by a sudden pine-cone appearing on the page.

At least I'm not a cat.

Some of you might not know this but I'm an incredibly curious person at times.

I'm the sort of person who will push the big red button just to see what it does. This attitude has gotten me into trouble a couple of times and has done so again.

Why you ask? Well dear friends I'm now reading "Twilight". Yes, I heard so much criticism of it that I had to pick it up myself just to see if its really that bad.

Meme, meme, meme.

A memeber of my flist posted a great meme where you get given five words that you have to write about.

I of course signed up for it, and have been given the words:

UNIVERSITY- I'm currently working on a cartoon for the student magazine "Salient". It is based on two students and their life. This means that I now need to follow university goings on in a desperate hope for inspiration. I'm also trying to remember the sort of things that students talk about when just doing nothing. Somehow I think my memories of long theological discussions that the group had (the name that I and a bunch of people who hung out together at uni gave ourselves) is not an accurate representation of normal student discussions.

BAKING- I love baking and cooking. However the two are very different. I find with cooking I can play around with the recipe. I would never do this with baking as those recipes are chemical equations and just changing it a tiny bit can result in very bad things happening.

JOURNALLING- I'm currently terrible at updating. I just can't think of what to write about. Either something is to trivial to share, to private to share or its a you-had-to-be-there thing.

CATS- I love cats, and miss my one who died last year very much. Whenever I see other cats I'm thrilled, but its just not the same as having a beloved pet whom you know all the quirks of.

DANCING- I love dancing. Last Friday a friend of mine tried to dance like Logan Echolls from "Veronica Mars". In essence it was an in joke (we both adore that show, and that character and were both ok with dancing) turned into a dance. An odd moment.

If you'd like to give me five more words do so and if you'd like five words of your own, just ask!
